Holidays to Montana with If Only

The fourth-largest state in the USA, but one of the least populated, Montana's wilds are vast, unspoiled and ripe for uninterrupted adventures. Big skies stretch out above, punctuated by snow-capped mountains surrounded by expansive forests and meandering rivers. From Glacier National Park in the north west to Yellowstone in the south, the state affords dramatic scenery, exploratory hiking trails and the chance to see wildlife aplenty including native grizzly bears. Historic towns offer an insight into life during the gold rush and ranches immerse visitors in the authentic Western way of life, still practiced today.

Highlights

The very embodiment of America's Great American West, Montana's extensive lands offer much to explore. Staggering scenery and captivating wildlife sits alongside small town charm, traditional ranches and rodeo life.

Breathtaking landscapes in Glacier National Park

Once home to more than a hundred glaciers, Glacier National Park has seen many recede and now showcases 25 active glaciers amongst its towering mountains, flowing waterfalls and verdant valleys. Despite its formidable size, exploring the park is easily done both on foot and by car. Miles of hiking tails criss-cross the land and the east-west Going-to-the-Sun Road allows visitors to sample the best of the scenery as they drive. Summer antics can include cruising on Lake McDonald or rafting on rivers whilst snow-based activities dominate in the winter.

Learn about life during the gold rush in Virginia City where Frontier life is bought back to life for visitors. A short distance away, Nevada City was a mining ghost town now restored into a living historical museum. Modern day Western life can be experienced at one of the state's many ranches or weekend rodeos.

Hit the slopes

For fun in the snow Montana offers premier snowsports in 15 ski areas including Whitefish Mountain Resort near Glacier National Park, and Big Sky Resort near Yellowstone. Often nicknamed as the 'Biggest skiing in America', Big Sky resort is home to over 2000 hectares of slopes and is so big visitors often feel like they have the mountain to themselves. There is plenty of fun to be had off of the slopes as well, with dog sledding, snowshoeing, snowmobile tours and snowy expeditions to the national parks just some of the options.
