Okinawa might be known for its glorious weather, but is also identified by UNESCO for sites important to both Cultural and Natural World Heritage.

Beautiful Beaches

When it comes to beach options, there are so many to be discovered, each with a distinct personality, from family favourites to secluded coves. Palm fringed shores are lapped by an ocean teeming with marine wildlife, offering opportunities for snorkeling with turtles along coral reefs, or whale watching in spring.

Ryukyu Heritage

Ryukyu Heritage

The 14th to 18th centuries saw Okinawa prosper during the dynasty of the Ryukyu kings, known for their trading prowess and extensive castle building. Today UNESCO recognises numerous fascinating sites of this proud era including ruined ramparts, royal tombs, and legendary battle grounds.

UNESCO Natural World Heritage Sites

As recently as 2021, several areas have been noted for their ecological biodiversity and importance to Natural World Heritage. These include the north part of Okinawa Island, Tokunoshima Island and Iriomote-Ishigaki National Park, incorporating mangrove jungles, waterfall trails and hotspots for endemic birds and wildlife.
